Butts & Gum Ltd began life selling plastic ashtray pouches. At the time, we thought they were a good idea because they prevented cigarette litter. What we didn't consider was the full product lifecycle and the impact of this on the environment. For instance, the foil-lined plastic pouches will not biodegrade and will stay in landfill for many years.
Having considered the product lifecycle, from production to landfill, we agreed to stop importing and selling the plastic portable ashtrays. Perhaps not a great decision in business terms because we were cutting the supply of a product that was popular with councils. But in environmental terms it was the right decision. More importantly, it inspired us to invent a product of our own, using the knowledge of the portable ashtray market and the product feedback we received from our customers.
In 2007 we created the world's first environmentally-friendly portable ashtray, which is more commonly known as the 'eco-ashtray'.
We're very proud of this product, since it is the most eco-friendly portable ashtray on the planet. It's made ethically in Britain from recycled, recyclable, biodegradable and compostable materials - so it is very 'green' indeed. And what's more, it is one of the most compact and easy to use portable ashtrays available today.
